Introduction
California’s Proposition 65, officially known as the Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986, requires businesses to provide a warning to California consumers before exposing them to chemicals known to the State of California to cause cancer, birth defects, or other reproductive harm.
At Maxpedition®, we are deeply committed to full legal compliance, transparency, and the safety of our customers. To ensure compliance with California law, we provide warnings for products shipped to or purchased within the State of California.
What does a Proposition 65 warning mean?
A Proposition 65 warning does not mean a product is dangerous or unsafe. The law simply mandates that a warning must be displayed if an item contains any listed chemical, even in trace amounts.
The threshold levels that trigger a Proposition 65 warning are incredibly strict—often far lower than federal safety standards. For instance, the warning threshold for reproductive toxins is 1,000 times lower than the level at which no observable health effect is seen. Because of these exceptionally low limits, a warning may be required even when the actual risk of exposure is completely negligible.
Why do Maxpedition® products include this warning?
Maxpedition builds heavy-duty, high-performance tactical nylon gear, backpacks, pouches, and apparel engineered to withstand extreme conditions. To provide our signature durability, water resistance, and structural strength, our manufacturing processes utilize industrial materials, including:
-
Synthetic polymers, heavy-duty nylon, and polyester weaves.
-
Polyurethane (PU) and PVC backings or internal water-resistant coatings.
-
Molded plastic buckles, rubberized zipper pulls, and high-tensile metal hardware.
Trace amounts of listed chemicals—such as phthalates (used to keep plastics flexible), heavy metals (found in metal hardware alloy components), or manufacturing solvents—may occasionally be present in these components or coatings.
Out of an abundance of caution and to ensure complete compliance with California regulations, Maxpedition applies the standard Proposition 65 warning across our product lines.
